Beechmount – Herd Profile

Beechmount Irish Moileds

Robert Boyle runs a herd of pedigree Irish Moiled cattle on the east coast of Northern Ireland at Millisle, Co. Down.

“I have been breeding Moilies up on twenty years now.  I started with two old cows from the Glassdrummond Herd owned by Sam Smiley, Ballynahinch.  A Glassdrummond Tulip and a Glassdrummond Lily.  I now have over 100 pedigree Irish Moileds, roughly 50/50 breeding stock and finishing bullocks.

I have found the breed extremely easy to run and care for especially in the busy spring period, the moilie mothers just get on with it, there is something to be said about not putting a cow and calf through the stress of a hard calving never mind yourself trying to calve them.  Their ease of calving is something we do not promote enough in the breed along with the fact that they far easier kept, very low input compared to that of other beef breeds and another bonus is they are a polled breed.

Depending on the time of year I try to keep feed costs at a minimal, I mainly try to finish the bullocks of grass or silage with the aim of achieving 300kg finish carcase weight. There is a such a demand for my finished Irish Moiled steers which are snapped up by local butchers.

Over the years I have sold a lot of bulls to smaller suckler men who keep coming back or reporting back how happy they are with the quality of the calves they got, well-marked, quiet and the heifer calves went on to make great suckler replacements with plenty of milk and when crossed again to other beef bulls they were extremely happy with getting a great shaped, marketable calf.”
